Description

The original Riesling vines on our home block here were planted in 1979 and are the oldest vines in Marlborough. Part of the reason for our conversion to organic and biodynamic farming was to rescue these old vines and coax them back to life. We saw huge potential in this old block and successfully rejuvenating them has been one of our greatest achievements. The fruit from these old vines has great fruit concentration and structure as well as great natural acidity that lends itself very well to making a dry style of Riesling.

A stunning beauty exhibiting precision and intricate detail. The elegant bouquet shows lemon sorbet, white floral and lime cordial aromas, leading to a concentrated steely palate displaying linear mouthfeel and fine flow. Tense and sleek, yet refined with a prolonged sophisticated finish. Certified organic
93 Points Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
Te Whare Ra are one of the champs of organic farming in NZ, a potent combo of Aus and NZ wife and husband too; a superior mongrel like a Labradoodle or similar. Here’s a rizza. And it is D for Dry. Limey and refreshing, even keeled and smooth sailing. Just so brisk acidity underneath a splashy, slippery feel of citrus, blackcurrant and lemon sorbet, extends long, draws out some talc-puff minerality and ends up being an utter delight, and kind of understated. Tick, tick, tick them boxes.

Offering stunning purity and refinement, the wine shows lemon peel, Gala apple, lime sorbet and white floral aromas, leading to an exquisitely fine palate that’s immensely concentrated and persistent. Crisp-dry yet silky and flowing to an impressively long mouth-watering finish. Certified organic. Style: Dry. At its best: now to 2034

Fragrant, floral, a core of ripe citrus fruits and fresh green apple. As the wine relaxes in glass aromas of stony white minerals begin to emerge. Dry on the palate with flavours of lemon and tangerine, crisp green apple and white blossoms. Pure, crisp and precise flavours enhanced by high acid line. Excellent balance and length.
94 Points – 2018 – Nick Stock for jamessuckling.com
This has a very fresh, concentrated and composed nose that fuses white peaches, lemons and apple pastry to good effect. The palate has a succulent feel with attractive, fresh acidity and a smooth core of white-peach and honeydew flavors. Drink or hold.

Vineyard

We love Riesling as a variety for its purity, elegance and age-ability and believe that our old block vines (planted 1979), combined with the growing conditions and climate here in Marlborough, are capable of making world class Riesling. This wine is produced from the original Riesling vines on our home block here, which were planted in 1979 and are the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough.

Vinification

All the grapes for this wine were hand-picked and hand-sorted. The fruit was then destemmed, gently crushed, and air-bag pressed. Some parcels given skin contact time. All parcels were fermented in stainless steel tanks that were purpose built for Riesling. We like very slow, cool ferments for the Riesling to help retain all the great floral aromatics. This wine has not been fined and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians and anyone else who loves authentic, truly hand-made wines.
